Regenmantel/Raincoat "Luxurious Flowers" Ottobre Woman 5/2012/19

Hallo liebe MMMler,

heute wollte ich gar nicht mitmachen beim Me-Me-Mittwoch, ich trug an Selbstgemachtem nur meine Miette (wie eigentlich immer, eine geniale Idee, graue Wolle zu verstricken!).

Dann aber ging es nach draußen und ich warf wie eigentlich immer seit letztem Herbst meinen selbstgenähten Regenmantel über... halt... da war doch was... selbstgenäht!

Also präsentiere ich, acht Monate nach Vollendung, endlich meinen Regenmantel nach Ottobre 5/2012/19 (Winterjacke "Luxurious Flowers"). Die Bilder sind z.T. von heute und z.T. vom letzten Jahr.

Der Mantel war echtes Bedarfsnähen, ich hatte mir seit Jahren mit einem grottenhässlichen Regenteil vom Lebensmitteldiscounter beholfen und als der Reißverschluss kaputtging nahm ich das als Zeichen...

Die Materialien (beschichteter Nylon, aufbügelbares Abdichtungstape, reflektierender Keder) bestellte ich bei extremtextil. Das war meine zweite Bestellung dort und ich bin sehr zufrieden. Es gibt zwar keine hübschen beschichteten Designerstoffe (mit denen ich auch kurz geliebäugelt hatte, aber: zu teuer und zu bunt für ein Basisteil), jedoch eine große Auswahl Funktionsstoff und Zubehör zu vernünftigen Preisen. Zum Reißverschluss muss ich anmerken, dass ich ein schicken Teil aus antikisiertem Metall gewählt habe, was ein Fehler war. Metall ist zu schwer für so einen Nylonmantel mit dünnem Baumwollfutter, ich hätte Plastik nehmen sollen.

Zum Schnitt kann ich nur sagen: Vorsicht vor der Kapuze. So lang und spitz dass Schneewittchens Zwerge neidisch würden und der arglose Träger im aufgesetzten Zustand nichts sieht. Vorne sind die Ende übereinander gekreuzt was bei entsprechendem Stoff und Futter hübsch aussehen mag, aber auch nicht wirklich praktisch ist. Trotzdem ich die Kapuze verkleinert habe, ist sie dadurch so weit, dass sie Wind oder Radfahren nicht stand hält. Hätte ich das gewusst, hätte ich eine elastische Kordel eingenäht, jetzt glaube ich aber nicht, dass ich alles noch mal aufmache. Vermutlich habe ich mir einfach ein blödes Schnittmuster ausgesucht.

Den Saum könnte ich noch mal absteppen, bisher ist er nur mit dem Futter verstürzt. Abgesehen davon finde ich den Mantel aber sehr hübsch und da ich meinen Kleidern eine treue Seele bin werde ich ihn bestimmt 20 Jahre lang tragen.

Hiya!

A few years ago, it may have been after the huge success that were my unexciting brown linen skirt and my boring gray wool skirt, both of which I wore to death, I decided to sew what's practical for me. (When I don't want practical I sew pink! and! colorful! for DD, highly recommended :-) )

That includes not sewing what I can but have enough of, or where my fancy takes me, but filling the holes in my closet.

I did have a raincoat. Which was cheap, ugly, unflattering. When the zip broke it was the last straw and I decided to make another one. I researched pretty laminated cottons (sigh) but couldn't justify spending that kind of money just on the fabric. And who am I fooling, I'm much more of a solid-color person, except maybe in summer when my love of patterned skirts runs wild. And this is a raincoat.

When making DD's raincoat (still unblogged, what a shame) I ordered sealing tape, reflective tape and other notions at extremtextil which I highly recommend. They have all sorts of functional fabrics and materials for making outdoor/sports clothing, backpacks, tents, what-have-you. At moderate prices.

So I ordered a waterproof, breathable nylon in a pretty rust color, reflectice piping and seam sealing tape. For the lining I used a dotted cotton in the front/back/hood and slippery rayon lining in the sleeves. Sadly, I bought a regular (metal) zipper which is really too heavy for this material and drags a bit alough it's pretty. On DD's coat I used a heavy duty plastic zip which was a much better idea.

The pattern is Ottobre 5/2012/19 (winter coat "Luxurious Flowers") which I mainly used because I had a deadline (travel) coming up and wanted to get going instead of searching my 101 pattern magazines. I'm not sure the asymmetrical shape is so great, and I have to issue a warning: the hood as is is huge. It hid half my face and had a longer tip that snow white's dwarves. It was strange, unpractical and unflatterin. Although Ottobre recommends this pattern „also“ for outdoor/functional fabrics there was nothing functional about the hood.

I redrafted it which is okay. It doesn't fix the basic shape which means the end of the hood cross in the front and fall apart when you open the coat which shows rather more of the lining than I find pretty. Also, this construction makes the hood a bit loose. When it rains and there's a wind or I'm riding my bike the hood won't stay on. I should have added rivets and a drawstring (like in DD's raincoat – this makes me realize what a well-thought out pattern THAT was – also Ottobre, by the way).

Last of all, I should have added a seam at the hem instead of just bagging the lining. It balloons a bit. I may go back and fix that; I doubt I'll fix any of my other complaints.

All that said, I love my raincoat! It's a shape and color I love, it's comfy, I think it's flattering and I plan on wearing this for 20 years at least!

Me-Made-Mittwoch/Me-Made Wednesday

Me-Made-Mittwoch schon wieder ungeschminkt (ist das jetzt schlimm oder gut, dass mir das egal ist?) und in der immer noch nicht gespannten Peggy Sue. Die heute gut ist, weil ich ein bisschen friere. Die aber nicht das Frühlingsjäckchen geworden ist, das ich mir vorstelle.

Ich habe Größe „S“ gestrickt und finde sie, vor allem oberhalb des Bündchens, zu weit. Das Garn ist auch ziemlich mollig (Schurwolle, „Karisma“ von DROPS). Ich musste einmal Garn nachbestellen, und so fühlt sich mein Jäckchen jetzt auch an: ziemlich schwer, dick, weit. Ob ich so ein warmes Schaf über ein Sommerkleid ziehen werde, bezweifle ich!

Ich muss auf jeden Fall noch dazu lernen, was die Größenwahl angeht. Die kurzen Ärmel machen die Jacke auch nicht richtig nutzbar für die kalte Jahreszeit (hätte ich längere gewollt, hätte ich noch einmal Wolle nachbestellen müssen). Vielleicht motze ich auch nur, weil ich mich erst an das neue Teil gewöhnen muss – das geht mir oft so. Meine Miette lag erst ein paar Wochen ungeliebt im Schrank, und zur Zeit ziehe ich sie kaum noch aus.

(Eigentlich sieht man meine Sachen sowieso nicht. Ich trage immer ein Tuch darüber.)

I'm a bit disillusioned with my PeggySue (still unblocked, ahem!) at the moment. It's too wide for my taste, above the waist at least (am I dreaming or are a lot of knitting patterns designed for the well-endowed lady?). I had to order more yarn which should have given me pause, because I made it from pure wool and now it's like a big, warm wool blanket! Which has its place but not necessarily in spring, and I doubt I will wear this over a light summer dress.

Then again, the short sleeves (and short sleeves it was or I'd have had to order more yarn yet again!) don't make this very practical in the cold either. Today I layered it over this longsleeve; not sure if it's a great look. Although this is a cold May day and I'm snug and warm! - So maybe it's just new project crankiness and will go away in time :-)

Me-Made-Mittwoch + Me-Made May 2014

Ein Rundumschlag nach einem Monat Handarbeit ohne Bloggen.

Me-Made-May: 

Ich trage bisher jeden Tag Selbstgenähtes, mache mir dieses Jahr aber keinen Stress mit Fotos. Ich hatte damals bei Zoes erstem Me-Made-May mitgemacht (und vorher ihr Me-Made-March Experiment verfolgt), kaum zu glauben und wunderschön, wie die Bewegung gewachsen ist. Sogar der Guardian hat einen Artikel darüber veröffentlicht!

Apropos Gruppenbewegung: 

Ich habe mein Frühlingsjäckchen fertig, bis auf Fäden einziehen und Spannen. So weit war ich auch vor Ostern, war aber zum Finale in Urlaub. Wir sehen uns zum Finale der Herzen! (Und: sieht meine neue Püppi nicht schick aus mit der Jacke? Außerdem: drapierter Stoff vom holländischen Stoffmarkt. Brauche ich jetzt einen Maxirock??) 

Zum Thema Spannen hatte ich schon mal in die Runde gefragt und bin jetzt auf diesen Post von Yarn Harlot zum Thema gestoßen. Mir ist dadurch vieles klar geworden und ich bin fest entschlossen, meine Peggy Sue noch zu spannen!

Und zuletzt: Me-Made-Mittwoch. 

Das Kleid habe ich aus einem Meter Baumwolljersey zusammengeschustert, als mir aufging, dass meiner Garderobe dringend Jerseykleider fehlen. Als Schnitt habe ich wieder das alte T-Shirt abgenommen (wie hier, das Teil trage ich trotz seltsamer Bauchnaht ständig!). Hüfte vermessen, die nötige Weite zugegeben und, soweit der Stoff es hergab, verlängert. Da das für mich echt kurz ist, habe ich mir den Saum gespart! Die Ärmel musste ich auch anschneiden, trotzdem gefällt es mir gut, und ich hatte quasi überhaupt keinen Verschnitt!

Woran ich arbeite:

Wie 50 % der anderen Stoffmarktbesucher, an diesem Rock aus der Ottobre in Originalstoff. Geniales Marketing ;-) !

Trying for a 15-minute-post :-)

I have been observing Me-Made May, but not taking pictures. Nonetheless, I'm so happy for the success of Zoe's venture – and well-deserved on the Guardian article, too!

Speaking of anything-alongs/group efforts, ahem, I missed the Spring Cardigan Knit-Along deadline. Actually my cardi was done, except for buttons, dangling threads and blocking. Oh, and I have found the post to answer all the questions there ever were on blocking, here on Yarn Harlot. If you're clueless like me, go read it! Now I understand!

But! We have a new roommate who is presenting the cardi as it is, threads hanging and unblocked but with buttons (Dutch fabric market!). Also presenting a fabric draped on her and looking so good that I who never wasted a thought on maxi skirts now might need a maxi. Go figure.

And! Me-Made-Wednesday. I made this dress from a scant meter of cotton knit material a few weeks ago. I had thought a bit about what my wardrobe needs (must be in the air with all the wardrobing posts going round?) and the answer was: more knit dresses. So there. I used the rubbed-off-t-shirt-pattern (like here, and I wear that shirt all the time!), cut on the sleeves for lack of material, left off the bottom hem for the same reason, measured my hip width and added as much width as needed in as much length as I had fabric. Ta-daa! Dress!

What I'm working on: The title skirt from the current Ottobre, in the original fabric, no less! As is every second sewer I met at the fabric market, Ottobre in hand, buying the very same fabric :-) !.

Souvenir T-Shirt Refashion

Yesterday, I took 45 minutes (I timed myself) to fix a tee shirt DD would never wear, although she loves white tees, the print is cute and it's a gift from a favorite aunt.

Why wouldn't she wear it? Well, the shape of the tee's settled firmly in the 80s of the last century. A tight neckband and a boxy cut. Although slouchy tees are making a comeback, they don't look like this, and on DD's very slim form it looks like she's wearing a sack. Not cute.

I did something like this before when I recut an old t-shirt of mine for DD. This time, though, I took a few pictures to document the process. Just in case someone other than all you pro sewers happens along ;-) !

Put a well fitting tee (here: one that still fits but only just) on top of the souvenir tee. Mark (or eyeball) the overlap on the sides and armhole. Don't cut off all the overlap; you need seam allowances for putting it back together!

Cut off the neck binding. Re-cut the sleeves (I left the sleeve hem intact).

If you're lucky like me you get enough scraps from the cut-offs that you can make a neck binding from it. Otherwise, I'd just turn under the neck.

I know there's a lot of miracle machines and techniques out there for knits. I just use a regular old sewing machine and whatever stitch takes my fancy. Since the fabric isn't very stretchy I didn't use a stretch stitch (which takes forever to sew) but a regular zigzag stitch, legth and width 2. I read you're supposed to use a longer length and smaller width but for me, that just leads to popped stitches.

A warning: this stitch won't look like RTW. Which I don't care about. Really, who goes looking at their neighbor's shirt hems?

Sew the sleeves into the armholes. Sew the side seams and sleeve seams in one. Sew the bottom hem.

Ich habe mich noch mal an die Umarbeitung (neudeutsch: Refashion) eines T-Shirts gemacht. Mit einem meiner T-Shirts hatte ich das schon einmal getan, dieses Mal habe ich aber ein paar mehr Fotos gemacht, für den Fall, dass sich auch mal ein nicht-Vollprofi auf diesen Blog verirrt ;-)

Es handelt sich um ein Souvenir-Shirt des Töchterleins. Wieso diese Art T-Shirt nicht mehr gern getragen wird muss ich wohl nicht erklären, oder? Ich kann aber berichten, dass meine Tochter die überarbeitete Version gestern gleich angezogen hat. Ein voller Erfolg!

So habe ich es gemacht, in einer 3/4 Stunde:

Ein einigermaßen passendes Shirt (hier: schon ein bisschen knapp) auf das Souvenir-Shirt legen.

Anzeichnen (oder merken), wie viel an den Seiten und Armausschnitten übersteht und abschneiden. Achtung: etwas Nahzugabe stehen lassen für's Zusammennähen!

Das Halsbündchen abschneiden. Wenn man Glück hat wie ich bleibt von den abgeschnittenen Seiten so viel übrig, dass man daraus eine neue Einfassung basteln kann. Ansonsten: Nahtzugabe nach innen wenden und Halsausschnitt einfach säumen.

Die Ärmel neu zuschneiden nach dem Muster-Shirt. Ich habe den Ärmelsaum gelassen und von oben neu geschnitten. Ärmel- und Seitennähte schließen. Unten säumen. Fertig!

Ich benutze ja keine Overlock, Coverlock oder was es noch gibt. Shirtstoff vernähe ich je nach Stretchigkeit mit einem Stretchstich (bei sehr dehnbaren Stoffen) oder Zickzackstich meiner regulären Maschine. Hier habe ich Zickzack mit 2er Länge und -Breite genommen. Mit längerem Zickzackstich habe ich kein Glück, die reißen mir immer. Ob das dann aussieht wie gekauft ist mir ehrlich gesagt piepegal; wer sich anderer Leute Säume so genau betrachtet hat ganz andere Probleme ;-) !

Und: fertig!

FJKA Zwischenstand/Knit-Along Report

Heute ist Zeit für den „Ersten Zwischenstand – Stolz auf den Fortschritt, Schwierigkeiten und Lösungen“ beim Frühlingsjäckchen-Knitalong.

Ich bin beim unteren Bündchen meiner Peggy Sue, bei der achten von insgesamt 11 Zopfmuster-Wiederholungen (uff).

Nicht so sicher bin ich mir gerade, ob ich noch einmal ein Zopfmuster stricke, jedenfalls so eins, das die Maschen mehrfach verdreht, mir relativ feinem Garn. Vielleicht mal eine schöne dicke irische Strickjacke?

Meine Hände sind von der Kleinarbeit etwas strapaziert/verkrampft und ich habe festgestellt, nachdem ich abends einmal zu weit von der Sofaecken-Lichtquelle weggesessen habe, dass sich ein paar Fehler eingeschlichen haben und mir schlicht die Traute fehlte, das Ganze aufzuribbeln (wer weiß, ob ich die Maschen noch mal aufgehalten bekomme?).

Ich bin jetzt auch nicht so perfektionistisch, die Fehler können ruhig bleiben. Aber entspanntes Sofastricken ist trotzdem anders.

Von anderen habe ich gehört/gelesen, dass sie parallel immer ein schwieriges und ein einfaches Projekt vorhalten, je nach Stricksituation. Vielleicht ist das die Lösung. Oder vielleicht ist das der Anfang vom Ende? Bisher habe ich meine Strick-/Garn-/Projektdisziplin noch knapp im Auge (Garn nur für die nächsten zwei Prjekte im Haus, für das nächste Projekt Muster gestrickt aber nicht angefangen), was man von meinen Nähprojekten (ca. 5 gleichzeitig in Arbeit, manche davon seit Jahren) und Stoffbergen nicht behaupten kann.

Außerdem soll das Stricken ja spannend bleiben. Eigentlich wollte ich demnächst mal mehrfarbig probieren. Übernehme ich mich? Oder brauche ich nur besseres Licht? Wie haltet Ihr es mit der Zahl und Schwierigkeit Eurer Strickprojekte?

It's time for an interim report on the spring jacket knit-along.

I'm about 4/5ths through with my PeggySue, and although I'm loving the look of the tiny cables I'm not loving knitting them. My hands cramp and I'm wishing for a nice fat Aran cable, twisted just once, instead of having to switch stitches three times within a single, DK weight, cable twist.

I also made a couple of mistakes when knitting in suboptimal lighting, and I'm too chicken to frog it. It's fine, just not relaxing, and I'm wondering whether I should start an easier project to switch to when knitting conditions are less than perfect.

My fear is I'll end up on a slippery slope having boxes of yarn and dozens of projects going, taking over the house which is impossible, since that's how it is with my fabrics and sewing projects and the house is taken over already!

Any tips on switching projects? Or relaxing crampy hands? (I thought I'm knitting TO relax. What happened?)

MMM+Top Knipmode Special SS 10/101

Schon wieder MMM, ein guter Grund zu bloggen und meine fertige Miette sowie ein neues Shirt zu tragen.

Ich war faul und habe das Top nach einem alten, bereits kopierten Schnitt genäht. Das alte Top trage ich immer noch oft und gerne.

Ich hatte den Schnitt ein zweites Mal aus etwas labberigerem Jersey (ohne Lycra vermute ich) genäht, und das ist nicht mein Favorit geworden.

Heute habe ich (zwischen ersten und zweiten Fotos!) endlich die Knöpfe an meine Miette genäht und fühle mich sehr wohl darin.

Auch in letzter Zeit genäht, ohne Schnitt bzw. abgenommen von einem Kaufshirt und brutal gestückelt ist dieses hier:

Nicht so geeignet für geizig gekaufte 0,5 m, ganz im Gegenteil zu dem Kniptop, das wegen der separaten Passe bei einem halben Meter Stoff eine gute Hüftlänge hat!.

Der Rock ist auch ein alter Favorit, hier besprochen.

It's Me-Made Wednesday again, and I'm me-made all over!

I made a new top from an old pattern. The original top is still going strong after almost three years! (I also made this once in a not-so-stable knit and don't love that one.)

I also finished my Miette and even added buttons... after the first photos were taken ;-) !

And you might recognize the skirt - it's an old favorite that still gets worn a lot.

Lastly, I made a second shirt - a rub-off from an existing one. Patched together since I only had a scant half meter of fabric.

Half a meter is, interestingly, enough for the Knipmode top in a generous length since that has a separate yoke piece.
