Boy's Cap and Girl's Tote/Jungenmütze und Mädchentasche

After making the pajamas, I dutifully consigned my old ones to the rag bag. Enter DS, crying, "But Mom! They're so soft! These are your best pajamas!!" Enter, then, my first refashion project (radical refashion, I might add). Pajama pants to boy's cap lining (not shown) and appliqué. What riddles me most: I used scraps of navy fabric to make the outer cap, but I can't remember having sewn anything in a navy blue smooth cotton. Hmmmm.

I used the pattern Ottobre 3/2010/39, "Cap Coconut", before here.

Nachdem ich meinen neuen Schlafanzug fertig hatte, wollte ich den alten unauffällig in die Altkleidersammlung schmuggeln. Söhnchen kriegte die Krise. "Der ist so schön! Und so weich! Das ist dein schönster Schlafanzug, den kannst du nicht wegtun!!" Okay, aber zerschneiden kann ich schon. Zur Applikation und Futter (nicht abgebildet) dieser Mütze. Die habe ich übrigens schon mal genäht (auch als Recycling-Projekt), hier. Das Schnittmuster ist Ottobre 3/2010/39, "Coconut".

Sewing for the Home/Hausnähen

Mädchenzimmervorhänge/DD's new curtains

Mein Projekt "Nähzimmer" ist vorerst gescheitert. Wohl am meisten daran, dass ein Nähraum, der sich zwei Etagen vom Lebensmittelpunkt der Familie entfernt befindet, nur unter selten idealen Bedingungen genutzt wird.

I may have mentioned my budding sewing room?! Nipped in the bud is more like it; if sewing means moving up two flights of stairs from the rest of the family (read: kids), I may as well never sew again. For the time being, it's back to (sewing on) the dining table!

Dafür haben wir aber Töchterchens Zimmer renoviert, inklusive rosa Wandfarbe und neuer Vorhänge. Ich weine noch jeden Tag ein bisschen dem alten Farbkonzept (gelb, mit gelb-grünen Toile-de-Jouy-Vorhängen) hinterher, aber wie schon gesagt, das Prinzessinnen-Syndrom fordert seinen Tribut.

Instead of fixing up my sewing room, we made over DD's new (formerly shared) room. Her highness insisted on princess-friendly pink walls and new curtains. I may or may not still be shedding tears over losing the old decorations (yellow walls and yellow-and-green Toile-de-Jouy curtains).

Für diese Vorhänge habe ich fast fünf Stunden gebraucht, incl. Messen und Zuschneiden. Bin ich sagenhaft langsam, oder was? Der Stoff ist von Stoff und Stil.

Can you believe it took me almost five hours to make these curtains? Talk about slow sewing... The fabric is by Stoff&Stil, a Danish mail-order company that has a unique selection and reasonable prices. Postage is a bit high, but my order arrived within two days... and that in the Easter week!

Der nächste Streich wird eine Tagesdecke/Quilt aus den quietschprinzessinigsten Stoffen, die ich seit ihrer Geburt gesammelt habe.

Next up: a quilt made up of all the cute overload fabrics I managed to collect since I had DD!

Pajama top: front/Schlafanzugoberteil: vorne

Planvolles Nähen ist ja nicht so meins (die Motivation hält ungefähr so lange wie die Planungsphase), deshalb wurde das hier umso schneller fertig: ein Schlafanzug. Gestern morgen befand ich, dass mein alter Schlafanzug eindeutig zu "altverheiratet" aussah, griff mir gestern abend den gut abgelagerten Stoff (den ich vor ca. vier Jahren tatsächlich mal zu dem Zweck gekauft hatte), nahm ein paar Maße und eine alte Tunnelzughose und nähte ohne Umschweife, Nadelwechsel, Schnittmuster oder Bügelbrett (wie man sieht!) diese Kreation.

You know about me and sewing SWAPs or SWALPs - I sew best without a plan and on a whim's first energy. This is how these pajamas came into being. I looked at my old pajamas and decided to put DH out of his suffering... erm... to make nicer ones! I had bought the fabric for sleepwear about... uh... four years ago? And I even managed to unearth it! I didn't waste time on patterns, needle changes or setting up the ironing board (as you can see!). I took a fairly well-fitting old pair of drawstring pants and a couple of measures of myself, and three drawstring tunnels, some elastic and two straps later, here's my new pajamas!

Interessant sind eigentlich nur die Bequemlichkeitszugaben des vermaßten Oberteils: ca. 3 cm zur Oberweite und ca. 15 cm zur Hüftweite. Zwei Tunnelzüge, Gummis, Träger, fertig!

I made the pants without outer leg seams, and the top is pretty self-explanatory except for the ease I added to my measurements. I added about 1 1/4 inches to the bust and 6 inches to the hips.

Ich bin übrigens erst gestern auf den Trichter gekommen, dass französische Nähte nicht nur besser aussehen, sondern auch mindestens genauso schnell zu fertigen sind wie Zickzackversäuberung. Besser spät als nie!

Oh, and I made french seams throughout. After (finally!) having the epiphany that french seams are no more work than zig zagging the seam allowances.

My favorite: only scraps left!/So lob' ich mir das: nur Schnipsel übrig!

TNT Girls' Pants/Mädchenhosen

I almost forgot the pants! (A sentence I luckily don't say too often.)

Ich hätte fast die Hosen vergessen. (Und das wollen wir doch nicht, oder?)

So here they are, made from my TNT girls' pants pattern, modified every so often due to growing legs. (This was originally a basic Ottobre pattern. I changed it to one pattern piece - no outer leg seams, cut-on waistband. I modify this pattern as needed, e.g. cutting a separate yoke/waistband, adding outer leg seams, etc.) The pants are Part IV of the unintentional Girl's Mini Wardrobe.

Hier ist also Teil IV der Mädchen-Kombi. Ich habe mein übliches Schnittmuster verwendet, das irgendwann einmal ein Ottobre-Schnitt war. Den habe ich modifiziert und in nur ein Schnittteil umgewandelt (Hose ohne Seitennaht mit angeschnittenem Bund), das ich nach Badarf verlängere etc. Hier habe ich z.B. einen separaten Sattel geschnitten sowie separaten Bund; manchmal nähe ich auch äußere Beinnähte, je nach Laune. Die Taschen mache ich idR frei Schnauze.

The material was a home dec linen remnant from IKEA, and odds and ends I had lying around.

Material waren ein IKEA-Leinenrest aus dem Stoffschrank sowie diverse andere Reste. Eventuelle Ähnlichkeiten mit einer heißgeliebten dunkelroten Cordhose, aus der meine kleine El leider rausgewachsen war, sind kein Zufall!

Girl's Blouse/Mädchenbluse Ottobre 1/2008/16

I have sewn my first mini-SWAP, except I didn't have a plan so it it's more like a SWOP (Sewing WithOut a Plan). Two tops and two pants for DD, and everything matches everything else. I reviewed the first top here and the first pants here. This is the second top:

It is sewn from "Tilda" fabric, which is from a Scandinavian fabric and craft patterns line very popular in Germany. Undeniably pretty, and very expensive, which irks me and usually makes me boycot the fabrics. Last week I found a remnant (1/2 a metre) for 50 % off though, and sewed it up as soon as I got home. To stick with the peasant top theme, I thought of the Ottobre raglan sleeve blouse pattern right away. It calls for 0.75 metres of fabric, but with adding a band at waist height and a very creative pattern layout I managed to squeeze it in.

DD has a heavy case of princess-ness, and while I prefer she also learns to cook, sew and practise the law (to name a far-fetched example), I totally understand her love for all things beautiful. Her face lit up when seeing this blouse, and she looks like a princess indeed!

So planvoll have ich noch nie genäht, wenn man mal davon absieht, dass ich keinen Plan hatte. Meine Tochter hat zwei Oberteile und zwei Hosen bekommen, die auch noch alle zusammen passen. Ein Top und eine Hose habt Ihr schon gesehen; hier ist Top II.

Normalerweise boykottiere ich ja Tilda-Stoffe, weil ich es gemein finde, dass Schönes so teuer sein muss. Als ich aber diesen Rest (1/2 m) um die Hälfte reduziert bei Karstadt sah, habe ich zugegriffen, und selten so schnell verarbeitet. Mir war gleich klar, dass ich diese Raglan-Bluse nähen wollte, die allerdings 0,75 m Stoff erfordert. Naja, wenn man die Musterrichtung außer acht lässt und eine Blende in Taillenhöhe einfügt, geht es auch so!

Unsere Tochter lebt gerne ihre Prinzessinnen-Fantasien aus (und ich versuche ihr nicht immer mit "damals in den 70ern mussten wir alle Latzhosen tragen"... zu kommen!). Ich fände es natürlich gut, wenn sie außer Tee trinken auch noch was Vernünftiges lernt, habe aber volles Verständnis für ihre Sehnsucht nach Schönem. Was soll ich sagen, sie liebt die Bluse, und sie sieht darin sehr royal aus!

My brand manager, aka husband says I should always put the label on the outside. We'll see. / Mein PR-Mensch (Mann) meint, ich solle das Etikett immer außen aufnähen. Mal schau'n.

About the pattern: The sleeves have a 7/8 length which I changed. Also, the sleeves are quite roomy and the bodice form-fitting. This is what the Ottobre photos show as well. /

Eine Anmerkung zum Schnitt: Ich habe die Ärmel länger gemacht, damit es nicht so "rausgewachsen" aussieht. Die Ärmel sind recht weit, der Leib eher anliegend. Man sieht es auch so auf den Ottobre-Fotos.

I have to admit this top wouldn't exist if I hadn't neglected a few of my duties last week. Sometimes I just need a "creative fix", you know? And since a woman's work is never done anyway... Might as well take a break. / Das Top existiert eigentlich nur, weil ich zwischen Arbeit, Haushalt und Steuer kurzerhand beschlossen habe, alles zu vernachlässigen und meinem kreativen Impuls zu folgen.

First Stitches II

Carolyn inspired me to post my first machine-sewn project (I already showed my first needlework a couple of years ago here).

I remember making these shorts on my mom's treadle machine. It sewed forward, backwards and zigzag. This may be why I still feel in the lap of luxury sewing with an electric machine, even though it is an old and unsophisticated model!

I remember sewing these shorts, but I have no memory of making the pattern (maybe my mom did?) and of making a french seam in the crotch (I must have forgotten because I'm pretty sure I did all the sewing myself).

I was about 13 or 14 years old then. Yes, the shorts still exist. Yes, they are still in my closet. I may not normally wear them, but when in a pinch and I'll only be in the garden... you may just see them on me!

In other news, you may have noticed that I'm sewing and posting less. All is well, just busy, and I really need to get with last year's resolution to sew in smaller spurts of time. A big thank you to all of you who are reading along and commenting, and who inspire me to keep sewing by showing your beautiful work!

Das ist mein erstes maschinengenähtes Werk, Jahrgang ca. 1983 oder `84. Und zur Not trage ich sie immer noch (wenn auch nicht in der Öffentlichkeit)! (Eine meiner ersten Handarbeiten überhaupt habe ich hier gepostet.)

Ich kann mich nicht an die Schnitterstellung erinnern, aber ans Zuschneiden und Nähen (auf der alten Tretnähmaschine meiner Mutter). Ich hätte gedacht, dass ich immer mit Zickzack versäubert habe, aber anscheinend hat meine Mutter mich schon vor 27 Jahren in schön versäuberte Nähte (french seam - wie heißt das auf Deutsch?) eingeführt. Ich habe das natürlich prompt vergessen!

Im Moment komme ich nicht viel zum Nähen und Posten, lasse mich aber immer gerne bei Euch inspirieren und freue mich über alle, die mir durch Lesen und Kommentare die Treue halten!

Girl's Pants - Mädchenhosen

It's spring and the kids are growing like weeds... I've given up on trying to make all - or most of - their wardrobes, but there's one thing that pains me to pay for, and that is children's pants. Here's why.

1. Too expensive.
   
   
2. Especially considering they change color (or shape) for good after the first intense playground session.
   
   
3. And how about taking kids' needs and bodies into consideration? (Instead of making skinny jeans out of non-stretch material. Ouch!)

Die Kinder wachsen wie Unkraut und die Frühjahrsgarderobe muss aufgefüllt werden. Nach Kinderflohmarkt und städtischer Einkaufsrunde blieben noch ein paar Lücken, insbesondere in Sachen Beinkleider.

Streitschrift gegen gekaufte Kinderhosen:

1. Zu teuer.




2. Dafür, dass sie nach einem Nachmittag auf dem Spielplatz nie wieder die Originalfarbe aufweisen werden.



3. Mit fragwürdigen modischen Details. (Enge Jeans aus nicht dehnbaren Stoffen? Aua.)

Solange die Kinder mich lassen und Bequemlichkeit vor modische Anpassung geht, werde ich noch die eine oder andere gemütliche Gummizughose fertigen. Hier die neueste:

Vielleicht nicht so schick, aber sehr bequem. Und mit (wieheißtdasrichtigaufdeutsch?) ungekehrter Applikation (Bilder siehe oben).
