Hello again! It's been a while, due to life and other hobbies (do you have those, too?) interfering.

Looking at other bloggers' output (how could I not?) I've been wondering whether I need to step up my sewing, and where to find the time.

When I began sewing more regularly in late 2007, my daughter was less than two years old and I was home most of the days, and all evenings, too. As mentioned before, I took up sewing as a kind of occupational therapy; my baby was sick a lot, and I spent many days alternating between doctor's offices and tending to her at home. I needed something pretty, colorful and productive to feel better, and I'm happy to say sewing worked a charm for this!

Nowadays, DD is thankfully much better and the children don't depend on my presence as much. In the last year, I've added ballet and other time-consuming engagements to my schedule. We're out and about much more, home much less. My life feels more balanced now than when I was home all the time, but it doesn't enhance my sewing productivity!

Then again, what am I sewing for? I wear something made by me at least half the time, and I still wear 90 % of what I've sewn in the last years. My closet doesn't have a great turnover, never had, so I don't need new clothes all the time. The kids are happy with their closet mix of RTW/secondhand/made-by-mom stuff.

While I don't have many long stretches of time to sew any more, I usually have a project going that keeps my crafty and creative self happy, just like I always have a book open... a date with a friend on the horizon... a work project nagging to get done... something cooking on the stove.

There is balance in what I do.

I've also been contemplating the worth of blogging. I don't have a "big" blog (many posts, many followers). One reason is that blogging is not my focus in life. Also, I work in a profession that is quite diametrically opposed to crafting, and I'd prefer not to get the two mixed up.

Not having a big blog, I've been wondering how much my little contribution is worth. A mass of sewing blogs have sprung up since I've started mine, providing more than enough information and inspiration. Should I continue?

Why am I blogging?

I started when Lindsay T asked her readers to do so (always one to listen to a Great Person's Words, I am!). Those were the days when I read maybe ten blogs or so. I thought it only fair to share my projects if I wanted to be entertained by others' creations. Also, I hadn't been commenting before that, thinking it a bit creepy to comment without "showing my colors" and allowing others to comment as well. Since then I feel I have become a part of the worldwide sewing community which is lovely! I'd be sad to lose that if I were to quit blogging. (Oh, and I appreciate all comments! Comment away, even if you don't have a blog!)

I also enjoy looking back at what I made, re-reading your comments, and I only wish there'd been blogs when I made my first pair of flowered pants (1990!) or my first stretch dress (ca. 1991) since those garments are long gone. I think even if it weren't public, it's worth keeping a log of any work that one is serious about.

Another point that isn't obsolete even when sewing less. The log/blog will just have fewer posts.

The verdict? I will keep sewing. I will keep blogging.

Wie Ihr vielleicht bemerkt habt, nähe und blogge ich nicht mehr so viel. Wenn ich Eure wunderbaren Blogs lese und sehe, was Ihr geschafft habt, werde ich leicht unzufrieden und habe deshalb ein paar Grundsatzüberlegungen angestellt.

Bin ich im Reinen mit meiner Zeit-/Kraftaufteilung und damit, dass ich weniger nähe? Ab Ende 2007 hatte ich ein paar produktive Jahre, was damit zusammenhängt, dass ich damals das Nähen ganz bewusst als Ausgleich gewählt hatte. Unsere Tochter, damals knapp 2, war ständig krank und ich saß entweder beim Kinderarzt oder mit ihr zu Hause. Ich war ziemlich deprimiert und schaffte mir mit dem Nähen, insbesondere von Kinderkleidung, einen fröhlichen, bunten, vor allem aber produktiven Ausgleich. Gott sei Dank geht es ihr heute besser, und ich habe im letzten Jahr sowohl für mich einige neue Aktivitäten begonnen als auch mit den Kindern mehr unternehmen können.

Für meinen Kleiderschrank muss ich nicht mehr Sachen nähen. Fast alles was ich genäht habe befindet sich in ständiger Rotation, ich bin sowieso nicht der Typ, der ständigen Wechsel im Kleiderschrank hat, und mir passen auch Sachen von der Stange. Die Kinder sind auch zufrieden mit ihrem Mix aus neu gekauft/aus zweiter Hand/von Mama genäht.

Mehrere Stunden am Stück nähen kommt kaum noch vor, aber ich habe nach wie vor immer ein Nähprojekt am Start, genauso wie ich zum Ballett gehe... die Arbeit ruft... ich jeden Abend eine Stunde lesen muss... leckeres Essen gekocht werden will.

So gesehen ist alles in Balance.

Nächste Frage: braucht die Welt oder brauche ich noch diesen Blog? Es gibt inzwischen so viele tolle Nähblogs, inspirierend und informativ.

Ich habe damals das Bloggen angefangen, weil eine tolle Amerikanerin, deren Blog ich immer las, dazu aufrief. Erst danach traute ich mich auch zu kommentieren, da ich immer das Gefühl hatte, wer sich äußert sollte sich auch zu erkennen geben und seinerseits Kommentare entgegennehmen. Dieser Austausch ist mir ganz wertvoll, und ich freue mich besonders, jetzt auch ein bisschen Teil der deutschen Nähblogger-Community geworden zu sein, nachdem ich das Pferd so von hinten aufgezäumt hatte! Das ist ein Argument für's Weiterbloggen.

Ich schätze auch den Rückblick auf meine Arbeiten und die Organisation - ordentliche Besprechung mit Bildern und Schnittmusternummer - die sonst im Hobbybereich nicht meine Stärke ist. Der Logbuch-Aspekt sozusagen. Ach, wenn ich doch schon meine Blümchenhose (frühe Neunziger! todschick!) oder mein erstes Stretchkleid (ebenso! ganz was Neues!) gebloggt hätte...

Liebe Leserinnen und Mitnäherinnen, ich werde Euch wohl erhalten bleiben. Aber sagt mal ehrlich, wie ist das bei Euch? Macht Ihr Euch auch manchmal solche Gedanken? Wie geht Ihr damit um, wenn Ihr nicht so viel nähen könnt? Welche Priorität hat Nähen für Euch? Und wie viele Nähblogs kann ein Mensch an einem Tag lesen?

Blouse/Bluse Burda 5-2009-115

Thank you for the lovely comments on the pirate pants! I have been sewing down even more stash; this cotton lawn was bought when DS was little and DD not yet here, so about six years ago. I definitely overthought what to make with the fabric, and it took Me-made June to finally get to it.

Me-made June? Well, I haven't even signed up, but I'm trying to keep up with the "lite" version, and enjoying it, too. It would be terribly repetitive to post pictures, so I'll probably spare you.

I made my usual adjustments to the pattern: Sizes 38 on top, 40 on bottom, enlarged lower sleeves, square shoulder adjustment. It fits very well although it is not exactly form-fitting or figure-flattering (the infamous "Does this make me look pregnant?"-effect).

I don't care, I really like it and the neckline is one of the most flattering I've sewn so far. It is also very light and breezy on hot and humid days like we're having at the moment. A winner!

I made one change to the pattern which is drafted for a back zipper. I omitted the zipper but kept the back seam, leaving the top 5 inches or so open and adding a fabric loop plus button.

Danke for die netten Kommentare zur Piratenhose! Ich bin immer ganz glücklich, wenn mir eine Jungssache gelingt, die nicht grau und öde ist.

Ich habe gleich einen weiteren Oldie aus dem Fundus verbraucht, ein Batist von Alfatex ca. 2005. Gestern war ich sehr froh, in der Schwüle etwas so Luftiges zu tragen!

Den Schnitt habe ich angepasst wie üblich (oben 38, unten 40, Ärmel erweitert und Schulter begradigt). Die Passform ist gut, auch wenn das eine oder andere Baby (nein, nicht schwanger!) noch darunter passen würde. Dazu muss man stehen bei diesem Stil und das tu' ich gerne, zumal ich den Ausschnitt ganz fabelhaft finde.

Hinten habe ich den Reißverschluss weggelassen, die Naht bis auf ca. 12 cm geschlossen und einen kleinen Schlingenverschluss nebst Knopf angebracht. Gefällt mir!

Pirate Pants/Piratenhose

I made my third pair of pants from Ottobre 3/2009/26, "Zoom Pirate Jeans". I left off the back pockets and fairly threw them together, testimony to the power of the "TNT".



I could reuse the copied pattern since it was for a birthday boy turning three. The fabric was a ticking remnant bought at IKEA before I even had kids (so, at least 8 years old).

The best was when he unwrapped the pants and said "Look! Pirate pants!". Mission accomplished.

Ich habe zum dritten Mal Ottobre 3/2009/26, "Zoom Pirate Jeans", genäht. (Leider kann ich keine Links zu den anderen setzen; Blogger frisst nicht nur Kommentare in letzter Zeit...)

Das Nähen ging super-fix; es hat wirklich was für sich, auf bewährte Schnitte zu setzen. Den Stoffrest hatte ich schon ca. 10 Jahre im Fundus; Matratzenstreifen von IKEA.

Der Empfänger, gerade drei geworden, packte aus und rief "Oh, eine Piratenhose!". Wie toll ist das denn?

Boy's Cap and Girl's Tote/Jungenmütze und Mädchentasche

After making the pajamas, I dutifully consigned my old ones to the rag bag. Enter DS, crying, "But Mom! They're so soft! These are your best pajamas!!" Enter, then, my first refashion project (radical refashion, I might add). Pajama pants to boy's cap lining (not shown) and appliqué. What riddles me most: I used scraps of navy fabric to make the outer cap, but I can't remember having sewn anything in a navy blue smooth cotton. Hmmmm.

I used the pattern Ottobre 3/2010/39, "Cap Coconut", before here.

Nachdem ich meinen neuen Schlafanzug fertig hatte, wollte ich den alten unauffällig in die Altkleidersammlung schmuggeln. Söhnchen kriegte die Krise. "Der ist so schön! Und so weich! Das ist dein schönster Schlafanzug, den kannst du nicht wegtun!!" Okay, aber zerschneiden kann ich schon. Zur Applikation und Futter (nicht abgebildet) dieser Mütze. Die habe ich übrigens schon mal genäht (auch als Recycling-Projekt), hier. Das Schnittmuster ist Ottobre 3/2010/39, "Coconut".

Während unser Großer neuerdings beim Chor ist, gehe ich mit der Kleinen in die Bücherei. Da musste natürlich eine Mädchenbüchertasche her. Dringend.

Sewing for the Home/Hausnähen

Mädchenzimmervorhänge/DD's new curtains

Mein Projekt "Nähzimmer" ist vorerst gescheitert. Wohl am meisten daran, dass ein Nähraum, der sich zwei Etagen vom Lebensmittelpunkt der Familie entfernt befindet, nur unter selten idealen Bedingungen genutzt wird.

I may have mentioned my budding sewing room?! Nipped in the bud is more like it; if sewing means moving up two flights of stairs from the rest of the family (read: kids), I may as well never sew again. For the time being, it's back to (sewing on) the dining table!

Dafür haben wir aber Töchterchens Zimmer renoviert, inklusive rosa Wandfarbe und neuer Vorhänge. Ich weine noch jeden Tag ein bisschen dem alten Farbkonzept (gelb, mit gelb-grünen Toile-de-Jouy-Vorhängen) hinterher, aber wie schon gesagt, das Prinzessinnen-Syndrom fordert seinen Tribut.

Instead of fixing up my sewing room, we made over DD's new (formerly shared) room. Her highness insisted on princess-friendly pink walls and new curtains. I may or may not still be shedding tears over losing the old decorations (yellow walls and yellow-and-green Toile-de-Jouy curtains).

Für diese Vorhänge habe ich fast fünf Stunden gebraucht, incl. Messen und Zuschneiden. Bin ich sagenhaft langsam, oder was? Der Stoff ist von Stoff und Stil.

Can you believe it took me almost five hours to make these curtains? Talk about slow sewing... The fabric is by Stoff&Stil, a Danish mail-order company that has a unique selection and reasonable prices. Postage is a bit high, but my order arrived within two days... and that in the Easter week!

Der nächste Streich wird eine Tagesdecke/Quilt aus den quietschprinzessinigsten Stoffen, die ich seit ihrer Geburt gesammelt habe.

Next up: a quilt made up of all the cute overload fabrics I managed to collect since I had DD!

Pajama top: front/Schlafanzugoberteil: vorne

Planvolles Nähen ist ja nicht so meins (die Motivation hält ungefähr so lange wie die Planungsphase), deshalb wurde das hier umso schneller fertig: ein Schlafanzug. Gestern morgen befand ich, dass mein alter Schlafanzug eindeutig zu "altverheiratet" aussah, griff mir gestern abend den gut abgelagerten Stoff (den ich vor ca. vier Jahren tatsächlich mal zu dem Zweck gekauft hatte), nahm ein paar Maße und eine alte Tunnelzughose und nähte ohne Umschweife, Nadelwechsel, Schnittmuster oder Bügelbrett (wie man sieht!) diese Kreation.

Pajama top: back/Schlafanzugoberteil: hinten

You know about me and sewing SWAPs or SWALPs - I sew best without a plan and on a whim's first energy. This is how these pajamas came into being. I looked at my old pajamas and decided to put DH out of his suffering... erm... to make nicer ones! I had bought the fabric for sleepwear about... uh... four years ago? And I even managed to unearth it! I didn't waste time on patterns, needle changes or setting up the ironing board (as you can see!). I took a fairly well-fitting old pair of drawstring pants and a couple of measures of myself, and three drawstring tunnels, some elastic and two straps later, here's my new pajamas!

Interessant sind eigentlich nur die Bequemlichkeitszugaben des vermaßten Oberteils: ca. 3 cm zur Oberweite und ca. 15 cm zur Hüftweite. Zwei Tunnelzüge, Gummis, Träger, fertig!

I made the pants without outer leg seams, and the top is pretty self-explanatory except for the ease I added to my measurements. I added about 1 1/4 inches to the bust and 6 inches to the hips.

Stoffdetail/Fabric detail

Ich bin übrigens erst gestern auf den Trichter gekommen, dass französische Nähte nicht nur besser aussehen, sondern auch mindestens genauso schnell zu fertigen sind wie Zickzackversäuberung. Besser spät als nie!

Oh, and I made french seams throughout. After (finally!) having the epiphany that french seams are no more work than zig zagging the seam allowances.

My favorite: only scraps left!/So lob' ich mir das: nur Schnipsel übrig!

TNT Girls' Pants/Mädchenhosen

I almost forgot the pants! (A sentence I luckily don't say too often.)

Ich hätte fast die Hosen vergessen. (Und das wollen wir doch nicht, oder?)

So here they are, made from my TNT girls' pants pattern, modified every so often due to growing legs. (This was originally a basic Ottobre pattern. I changed it to one pattern piece - no outer leg seams, cut-on waistband. I modify this pattern as needed, e.g. cutting a separate yoke/waistband, adding outer leg seams, etc.) The pants are Part IV of the unintentional Girl's Mini Wardrobe.

Hier ist also Teil IV der Mädchen-Kombi. Ich habe mein übliches Schnittmuster verwendet, das irgendwann einmal ein Ottobre-Schnitt war. Den habe ich modifiziert und in nur ein Schnittteil umgewandelt (Hose ohne Seitennaht mit angeschnittenem Bund), das ich nach Badarf verlängere etc. Hier habe ich z.B. einen separaten Sattel geschnitten sowie separaten Bund; manchmal nähe ich auch äußere Beinnähte, je nach Laune. Die Taschen mache ich idR frei Schnauze.

The material was a home dec linen remnant from IKEA, and odds and ends I had lying around.

Material waren ein IKEA-Leinenrest aus dem Stoffschrank sowie diverse andere Reste. Eventuelle Ähnlichkeiten mit einer heißgeliebten dunkelroten Cordhose, aus der meine kleine El leider rausgewachsen war, sind kein Zufall!
