Girl's Skirt/Mädchenrock Ottobre 6/2008/16

I discovered a new (to me) fabric shop in Bonn. It's like a candy store for sewers in there and I'd love to show a few pictures; must bring my camera next time (I keep forgetting I have a phone with a camera!). The first time I went there I saw this Echino fabric. I'd never seen Echino fabrics in a store or at a market, and they have quite a selection. Since I adore the designs, this was a real treat, and of course I had to buy some!

(Front)

DD is growing out of her Matryoshka skirt which is a real tragedy. Funny, too, because this was made with more speed than care, but it is her best loved skirt which now only just covers her behind. I thought this Echino fabric would make a good replacement.

(Back)

Of course, Echino fabric being quite expensive, I bought too little (I also forgot the width issue AGAIN – will I ever learn?), so I had to fill in with a remnant of the elephant jean bag lining.

(Pleat Detail)

I used Ottobre 6/2008 Nr. 16 „Tammy“ for a pattern and I love the result. Well, what do I know? DD will wear it, but it's nowhere near as loved as the Matryoshka skirt. Should I source more matryoshka fabric and make an upscaled copy? What would you do?

(Love this!)

Happy sewing!

(Faltendetail)

Natürlich habe ich zu wenig Stoff gekauft. Wisst Ihr, was Echino-Stoffe kosten? Ohnmacht inklusive.

Was würdet Ihr machen?

MM/IR: T-Shirt Refashion

You won't believe it, I finished one garment of the Make and Mend-Challenge! It's the "re-work one garment" part and I refashioned a ladies' tee (mine) into a girls' size tee.

Here's what I did:

  1. Laid the tee beside a well-fitting tee of the recipient (actually, one that's getting a bit small).
  2. Decided which parts of the original to keep (hem, sleeve hems, front neck binding, most of the print).
  3. Laid the fitting tee on top of the old tee, to cut around.
  4. Cut off the sleeves (saving for later), cut the sides and armholes smaller approximating the fitting tee, cut off the shoulder seams, back neck binding and part of the front, to make a new neck opening that's as tight as the fitting tee.
  5. Folded the back neck allowance to the outside twice (so it would look like a binding, sort of), stitched.
  6. Stitched and topstitched the shoulder seams.
  7. Stitched the sleeves to the neck armholes, cutting off the leftover length at the underarms.
  8. Stitched the side seams and sleeves in one.

Done! I hope DD likes it (otherwise I may have to embellish it and check off another part of the challenge :-) )

Happy sewing!

So ging's:

  1. Habe ich beide Shirts nebeneinander gelegt.
  2. Entschieden, was bleiben soll und was weg kann.

Make Do and Mend/Improvisiere und Repariere

Shelley of New Vintage Lady has started a Make Do And Mend sew-along. When I read the details of her challenge I immediately had a few ideas. I don't know if I'll follow through to the end (real life and all that, you know...), but here are my thoughts for what it's worth:

  1. Make two crafts from scrap fabric, (hat, pot holders, table runner, etc.). I've been meaning to make a small envelope bag for a friend, like this (not blogged). She gave me an old pair of shorts „for scraps“, so I might use that. Need to get cracking! Also, I still have lots of scraps from my advent calendar making days. I could make a cute Christmassy table runner or something.
  2. Rework one garment. When I re-started ballet classes I bought myself a cute ballet print t-shirt that was of the worst quality. I mean, I buy a lot at H&M and that stuff lives for years, but this was shrunken and misshaped after a few months. I still wear it (that's how I roll!) and decided because I wouldn't get rid of it otherwise to re-work it into a tee for my DD. She also has a beloved print tee that's too small; I've been meaning to save the print and appliqué it to a new shirt.
  3. Make two wearable items not meant for day wear (i.e. : jim jams, robe, slip, etc.). Um. Yeah. Need to think about that.
  4. Embellish one item (i.e. faggoting, pin tucking, embroidery, etc). (My embellish-along-tag is rolling in its grave, so to say...) My son who hasn't received a me-made garment in a long time loved the fox appliqué shirt that was on the Ottobre cover a couple of years ago. That's quite work-intensive so I'll see whether I get around to it.
  5. Make one item (in addition or one of the items above) for someone else. See above; these are mostly for others!

Thanks, Shelley, for starting the sew-along, and happy sewing everybody!

******************************

  5. Eine Sache für jemand anderen machen. Siehe oben, mehrfach!

Wer näht noch irgendwo „along“? Viel Spaß und näht schön!

Pajama Bottoms/Schlafanzughose

Great minds think alike, or so I like to tell myself :-). Shannon showed her PJ bottoms in a cute quilting fabric on Wednesday, and I also have a pair left from before my vacation to show you.

It's rather expensive to buy quilting cottons in Germany, so when an online shop had a sale I jumped on this Heather Bailey fabric. Even with my well-documented love for bright colors and patterns in summer, this is a bit much (for me) for day, but it sure brightens, so to say, my nights!

DD was very disappointed this fabric wasn't for her. Since then I've had visions of a girls' shirt dress in this fabric. Lucky for me I didn't have enough fabric for a dress :-) . I also forgot about the smaller quilting width (again!) and just eeked this out of a meter of fabric by cutting crosswise. The selvedge does double duty as the hem.

The pattern is „rubbed off“ (cut around) another pair of Pjs.

Happy sewing!

*******************

Gibt’s denn so was?)
