Souvenir T-Shirt Refashion

(Heute gibt's Deutsch weiter unten...)

Yesterday, I took 45 minutes (I timed myself) to fix a tee shirt DD would never wear, although she loves white tees, the print is cute and it's a gift from a favorite aunt.

(Offending tee's on the left)

Why wouldn't she wear it? Well, the shape of the tee's settled firmly in the 80s of the last century. A tight neckband and a boxy cut. Although slouchy tees are making a comeback, they don't look like this, and on DD's very slim form it looks like she's wearing a sack. Not cute.

I did something like this before when I recut an old t-shirt of mine for DD. This time, though, I took a few pictures to document the process. Just in case someone other than all you pro sewers happens along ;-) !

Put a well fitting tee (here: one that still fits but only just) on top of the souvenir tee. Mark (or eyeball) the overlap on the sides and armhole. Don't cut off all the overlap; you need seam allowances for putting it back together!

Cut off the neck binding. Re-cut the sleeves (I left the sleeve hem intact).

If you're lucky like me you get enough scraps from the cut-offs that you can make a neck binding from it. Otherwise, I'd just turn under the neck.

I know there's a lot of miracle machines and techniques out there for knits. I just use a regular old sewing machine and whatever stitch takes my fancy. Since the fabric isn't very stretchy I didn't use a stretch stitch (which takes forever to sew) but a regular zigzag stitch, legth and width 2. I read you're supposed to use a longer length and smaller width but for me, that just leads to popped stitches.

A warning: this stitch won't look like RTW. Which I don't care about. Really, who goes looking at their neighbor's shirt hems?

(Except for you ;-) )

Sew the sleeves into the armholes. Sew the side seams and sleeve seams in one. Sew the bottom hem.

Violá: A souvenir t-shirt refashion!

Spring's arrived full force in Germany, and TGIF! Have a great weekend!

***********************************

MMM+Top Knipmode Special SS 10/101

(scroll down for English...)

Andere tolle Näherinnen in ihren schönen Sachen gibt es beim Me Made Mittwoch hier zu sehen.

Näht schön!

***********************************

It's Me-Made Wednesday again, and I'm me-made all over!

I made a new top from an old pattern. The original top is still going strong after almost three years! (I also made this once in a not-so-stable knit and don't love that one.)

I also finished my Miette and even added buttons... after the first photos were taken ;-) !

And you might recognize the skirt - it's an old favorite that still gets worn a lot.

Lastly, I made a second shirt - a rub-off from an existing one. Patched together since I only had a scant half meter of fabric.

Half a meter is, interestingly, enough for the Knipmode top in a generous length since that has a separate yoke piece.

Women's Shirt/Damenshirt Ottobre Woman 5/2012/8

(Scroll down for English...)

****************************

I made several things for myself this year (four I think? including a raincoat!), and I tried hard to make them useful. The red skirt was the first of these garments and I wore it a lot.

This shirt was meant to replace a much-worn item in my wardrobe that had never been quite right (but right enough to be in weekly rotation for years). I'm sorry to possibly spoil any expectations you have for my usual dowdy/classic style, but I made myself a stripey top that, judging from sewing blogs, seems to be the staple in the closets of a younger, more fashionable demographic (Zoe, Tilly... to name a few).

To keep in line with my usual style as far as possible considering this is A! Fashion! Staple! I changed the neckline from Ottobre-dowdy (narrow and a tiny little bit deep) to Uta-dowdy (a bit wider, a bit less deep), resulting not in a slight boatneck as I'd hoped but a true crewneck. Oh well. Who am I fooling!

The Ottobre pattern is for a patchwork shirt; I obviously didn't cut apart the pattern pieces (and I'm not sure why anyone would do this to themselves – I'm sure there are patchwork jersey prints out there!).

I made my usual alterations (straight shoulder/long waist/grading two sizes from waist to hips). As per usual, I made this on my regular sewing machine. I used a stretch stitch, since I've always had problems with popping seams when using other stitches. The hems don't look RTW, which was never my goal anyway (and I sincerely wonder who will ever notice!).

As predicted, the shirt's been worn all the time. A winner in my book!

Happy sewing!

I still sew, you know! - Sie näht doch, noch!

I had an unexpected couple of hours on hand and decided that a fast knit top was the way to go. I sewed up some stash fabric from years ago. The pattern is from Ottobre Woman 2/2009; actually a frankenpattern of shirt no. 5 (bodice) and dress no. 14 (flutter sleeves, a bit hard to see in my photos).

Worn with this skirt/Mit diesem Rock

Since this went well (and fast!) I made it up again in another stash fabric, without sleeves and without a back facing, I just used a self-binding. I also scooped out the armscye a bit on the arm/shoulder side; I could have made it a bit smaller on the bottom, maybe next time.

Do I need a sway back adjustment? Muss ich für Hohlkreuz ändern?

What do you sew when there isn't enough time in the day?

Was näht Ihr, wenn wenig Zeit ist?

SSS Week 2/Woche II + Top Knipmode

Aaargh... Why can't I comment? I've emptied my cache or whatever you call it, I do not click "stay logged in", nothing helps. Now I'm wondering... Where do my comments go to?  Some black hole in interspace?

Here's week 2: / Woche II:

(top, top, skirt, skirt, blouse)
(Top, Top, Rock, Rock, Bluse)

I also made this Knipmode top again; I thought I'd taken a better photo but apparently, no.
Hm.

Happy sewing!
Näht was Schönes!

Blouse/Bluse Burda 5-2009-115

Thank you for the lovely comments on the pirate pants! I have been sewing down even more stash; this cotton lawn was bought when DS was little and DD not yet here, so about six years ago. I definitely overthought what to make with the fabric, and it took Me-made June to finally get to it.

Me-made June? Well, I haven't even signed up, but I'm trying to keep up with the "lite" version, and enjoying it, too. It would be terribly repetitive to post pictures, so I'll probably spare you.

I made my usual adjustments to the pattern: Sizes 38 on top, 40 on bottom, enlarged lower sleeves, square shoulder adjustment. It fits very well although it is not exactly form-fitting or figure-flattering (the infamous "Does this make me look pregnant?"-effect).

I don't care, I really like it and the neckline is one of the most flattering I've sewn so far. It is also very light and breezy on hot and humid days like we're having at the moment. A winner!

I made one change to the pattern which is drafted for a back zipper. I omitted the zipper but kept the back seam, leaving the top 5 inches or so open and adding a fabric loop plus button.

Happy sewing!

Girl's Blouse/Mädchenbluse Ottobre 1/2008/16

I have sewn my first mini-SWAP, except I didn't have a plan so it it's more like a SWOP (Sewing WithOut a Plan). Two tops and two pants for DD, and everything matches everything else. I reviewed the first top here and the first pants here. This is the second top:

It is sewn from "Tilda" fabric, which is from a Scandinavian fabric and craft patterns line very popular in Germany. Undeniably pretty, and very expensive, which irks me and usually makes me boycot the fabrics. Last week I found a remnant (1/2 a metre) for 50 % off though, and sewed it up as soon as I got home. To stick with the peasant top theme, I thought of the Ottobre raglan sleeve blouse pattern right away. It calls for 0.75 metres of fabric, but with adding a band at waist height and a very creative pattern layout I managed to squeeze it in.

DD has a heavy case of princess-ness, and while I prefer she also learns to cook, sew and practise the law (to name a far-fetched example), I totally understand her love for all things beautiful. Her face lit up when seeing this blouse, and she looks like a princess indeed!

Girl's Shirt/Mädchenshirt Ottobre 1/2009 no. 12

Here's the shirt "Kaisa":/Hier ist das Shirt "Kaisa":

And my new label./Und mein neues Namensetikett.

My brand manager, aka husband says I should always put the label on the outside. We'll see. Mal schau'n.

About the pattern: The sleeves have a 7/8 length which I changed. Also, the sleeves are quite roomy and the bodice form-fitting. This is what the Ottobre photos show as well. /

I have to admit this top wouldn't exist if I hadn't neglected a few of my duties last week. Sometimes I just need a "creative fix", you know? And since a woman's work is never done anyway... Might as well take a break.

What duties have you neglected for a creative break?

MMMF 6+7

Vielen lieben Dank für die netten Kommentare! Many thanks for the lovely comments!

Hier ganz kurz gestern und heute: / Yesterday's and today's outfits:

Me-made: Bluse/blouse, Jacke/jacket

Zwei Fragen möchte ich noch beantworten: / I have two commenter's questions in the backlog that I'd like to answer:

Katie asked about my sweater. No, it's not knit by me, it's RTW . I keep thinking I should knit one. I have knit socks before. How hard can it be? (Famous last words.)

Sabine asked whether I'm a professional dancer. Not at all, it's just a hobby; but isn't that the nicest question?!

Happy sewing everybody!

MMMF 4+5

Yesterday's outfit: My Knipmode shirt that I wear so much I think I need to make another polka-dot top. The pattern is quite similar to Thursday's Burda shirt and a much better fit, but I wouldn't have any idea how to alter this pattern for long sleeves.

I also wore my me-made ballet clothes this week (as always); while I still feel a bit conspicuous in my raspberry-colored leotard that doesn't keep me from wearing it, and I must say it's holding up really well!

Today I'm channeling my inner preppy; I might be too old for this look but I love this skirt (and argyle!) so much I'll just have to live with it.

Last but not least here's a handmade belated Christmas present that I received: A latte glass cozy. Cute!
