Artistic Pursuits – Kunstsachen

Hello, sewing friends! I hope you had a lovely Easter holiday, if you celebrate. We're still in spring break mode, having entirely too much fun. No sewing, though.

Is sewing an art? Claire has a fascinating series on this and other sewing themes; if you haven't checked her out you should! I've always felt that sewing is more of a craft than an art; on the other hand it fulfills my need to create, to think up and make something. Is that art?

When on vacation, my need to create doesn't go away. I usually take lots of pictures and try to involve the children in some sort of creative project. We just went away for a week and inspired by Elsie Larson's art diary and Spottedroo's series on painting, I bought a handful of acrylic colors and we went to town.

(Inspiration and art/Inspiration und Umsetzung)

Do you need to be „good“ to be an artist? I used to think so. Having children made me reconsider my position. Children have this un-selfconscious way of singing, dancing, painting, crafting for their own joy. I don't want them to lose that and express themselves and be creative only if others validate it, if they're „good“.

I try to be a role model. I feel like painting so I paint, regardless of practice, technique or what ever the result looks like. I had so much fun.

Do you think sewing is art? Do you practise art/crafts other than sewing?

Was meint Ihr, ist Nähen Kunst? Macht Ihr noch anderes Kreatives außer Nähen?

(Thanks to Spottedroo who asked to see my paintings!)

  1. Love the paintings! It's hard letting go of the need for everything to be perfect...children can certainly teach us a lot.:) We are still in spring break mode too and not much sewing is going on. Plenty of time for that next week when school is back in session.

  2. What a great lesson! I took watercolor classes for several years and suck, I mean SUCK at art. But it is fun when you aren't thinking about how terrible you are at it every second. I like sewing because it is creative but doesn't require artistic talent.

  4. What lovely paintings! Yes, I agree that sewing can be an art, as well as a craft. It depends on how far you take the creative process in adding special and unusual details, and realising a vision that does not necessarily correlate with translating the pattern literally.
