The costume is about 3/4 done, and I've even ordered freezer paper for the FEA! How productive!

I'm posting though because I discovered some pictures of a bag I made for Christmas - I recycled an old pair of DH's jeans and lined with an elephant print from Stoff&Stil.

Das Kostüm ist zu 3/4 fertig (und ich halb blind vom kreischfarbigen Karnevalssatin...) und ich habe "freezer paper" bestellt, damit es hier mit dem Schablonieren weiter gehen kann.

Zeigen wollte ich heute aber dieses Weihnachtsgeschenk, das ich bisher unterschlagen hatte. Aus einer alten Jeans meines Mannes (seit "destroyed" im Trend ist halten die guten Stücke ja höchstens noch ein Jahr), gefüttert mit Elefantenstoff von "Stoff&Stil".

Carnival Distraction / Schon wieder: Karneval

In what little time I have to think about sewing/embellishing, I'm getting awfully distracted by the fact that it's four weeks until Carnival. And I have two costumes to sew.

I went fabric shopping today. This is my preliminary sketch for costume no. 1 (flower fairy):

Fabric Embellish-Along 1 / Gemeinsam Stoff Gestalten I

Dear readers,

first of all, thank you for your interest in embellishing with me! Not to worry about speed or artistic abilities; my time is just as limited, and it's not about having more pressure, it's about having more fun!

I'd thought of making a plan, finding a fancy name (FEA?), designing a button for our common project...
THEN, however, I read today's post about fabric stencilling on Steph's blog, and suddenly I was raring to go. Would you like to jump right in with me?

My project for the next weeks shall be stencilling a tee shirt for DH's birthday (late February deadline). I'd love you to join me in stencilling, or decide on a different embellishing technique and share your process with me. In case you'd like to chat, I have (finally!) added my email to my profile on the left. Until I know who will join in and stick with FEA, when I hear from you I will share your projects in the format of links in a post. If a lot decide to join, I might look into a linking tool.

FEA 1 - Stencilling

So, let's get to the down and dirty, eh, colorful, shall we?

I have stencilled on fabric before, with varied results. I once stencilled a tee (for DH, detect a trend here?) with a store-bought stencil and fabric paint. That was a total fail; first, the color (orange on gray) didn't show well, then although I applied it according to directions and set with an iron, the color started to come off in the wash right away.

I also stencilled this motif as a border on IKEA calico/muslin fabric. This held up much better which may have to do with the greater color contrast and also the fact that it's a curtain (in front of a clothes cupboard; I also stencilled this border on the walls) and thus hasn't been washed too much (and the color had a long time to set before I first washed it!).

What I haven't tried so far:

• designing a motif myself or
•  taking an image from elsewhere (the internet) and making my own stencil.

Steph uses freezer paper for stencilling which can be printed and ironed on and thus stops bleeding underneath the stencil. I will try to source this here in Germany (I know of an online quilting shop that has it but will try to find it locally first). If there's a lot of it in the package I might be willing to share (in Germany/Europe), so keep your eyes open for this. Dibs suggested using mylar paper and spray mount for a reusable stencil. Worth looking into, for sure!

Steph also, and I never heard of this, successfully used regular flat enamel spray paint for stencilling. Have a look at her tutorial.

Since I've been a bit disappointed in price and quality of fabric paint I'll definitely consider spray paint myself.

I will also try my hand at sketching my own stencil art (oh my!) and look for suitable images elsewhere.

I don't think I'll sew the tee myself; better go and have a look around at the sales!

 So, here's the plan:

• buy or order freezer paper
• doodle some stencil art
• look for ready-made images
• buy a tee shirt.

Hallo zusammen,

wie schön, dass der (die) eine oder andere Interesse an meinem Stoffgestaltungs-Projekt hat! Zusammen macht es doch gleich mehr Spaß. Ich lege im eigenen Interesse die Latte niedrig auf; kein Druck (außer auf dem Stoff, haha!) und keine Hetze, nur Spaß und am Ende des Jahres ein paar neue Fertigkeiten.

Ich überlegte gerade noch, wie ich es am besten angehe (Zeitplan, Gruppenorganisation, Namen (GSG?), ein Button...) als ich heute morgen Steph's Blog zum Thema Schablonieren las und am liebsten sofort losgelegt hätte!

Damit steht mein erstes Projekt fest: Ich werde wie Steph ein T-Shirt schablonieren, und falls es gelingt, wird es ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für den Göttergatten. Der Zeitrahmen steht damit auch: bis Mitte-Ende Februar muss es fertig sein.

Habt Ihr Lust, mit zu schablonieren, oder erst etwas anderes auszuprobieren? Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Ihr mich über Eure Projekte auf dem Laufenden haltet; ich habe sogar (endlich!) meine E-Mail-Adresse in mein Profil eingefügt. Bis auf weiteres werde ich die Projekte in meinen Posts verlinken; sollten noch mehr Kreative mitmachen, würde ich evtl. auch ein Verlinkungstool einstellen.

GSG I - Schablonieren

Ich habe schon mal ein T-Shirt schabloniert, was leider überhaupt nicht geklappt hat :( Ich glaube, es lag an der Farbe (orange auf grau) und vielleicht daran, dass ich nicht dick genug aufgetragen habe?! Ich bin jedenfalls nach Anleitung vorgegangen und habe auch brav gebügelt, trotzdem war die Farbe schlecht zu erkennen und hat sich bei der ersten Wäsche schon gelöst.

Diese Bordüre habe ich vor Jahren auf IKEA-Bomull schabloniert und sie hält gut; das mag am größeren Farbkontrast liegen und daran, dass sie auf einem Vorhang ist, der selten gewaschen wird, und sich die Farbe lange setzen konnte, bevor er das erste Mal in die Wäsche kam!

Steph hat übrigens erfolgreich (ein Druck hält schon seit einem Jahr!) mit gewöhnlichem, mattem Sprühlack schabloniert. Hier ist ihr Tutorial.

Angesichts der Preise und Qualität von Stofffarbe werde ich das bestimmt mal ausprobieren. Außerdem probieren möchte ich

• "freezer paper" (eine Art Wachspapier, das sich bedrucken und aufbügeln lässt) für die Schablone zu benutzen
• selbst ein Motiv zu entwerfen oder
• ein Motiv aus Büchern/Zeitschriften/Internet zu verwenden.

Das T-Shirt werde ich wohl nicht nähen sondern versuchen, noch eins im Schlussverkauf zu erhaschen.

Das Freezer Paper habe ich vor einiger Zeit beim Internetversand "Quiltzauberei" gesehen; erst werde ich aber hier vor Ort suchen. Sollte eine Packung besonders viel enthalten (Rolle), werde ich vielleicht etwas abgeben (in Deutschland/Europa), also haltet die Augen offen!

Mein Plan für die nächsten Wochen:

• Schablonen-geeignete Motive kritzeln
• in anderen Medien nach geeigneten Vorlagen suchen
• "freezer paper" kaufen/bestellen
• T-Shirt besorgen

Making Stuff - Dinge machen

I don't need to sew to be happy (gulp!). But I do need to make something, preferably with my hands, to be happy. At different times in my life that meant writing a lot, baking a lot, crafting, embroidering, photographing... And, yes, sewing.

In the past years I've especially enjoyed, apart from sewing, embellishing the sewn garments, a little embroidery, and drawing with my children (never mind what that looks like!). Since my time won't multiply and large quantities of sewing won't happen I thought about where to take my creative urges, and what might be compatible with the bits and bobs of sewing that I do.

I happened upon this book I've had for a couple of years:

It contains ideas and techniques for stamping, stencilling and screen-printing fabric. I'd love to try all three and add batik to the mix. Maybe a little self-designed embroidery. This, then, shall be my project for 2012:

*Designing, printing and embellishing fabric.*

I'll think up a timetable to make sure I'll get to all of it in the space of 12 months. Would any of you care to join me? It'll be totally pressure-free, just an idea to turn a new page in our fabric-consuming hobby!

Ich muss nicht unbedingt nähen (Schreck!), aber ich muss etwas machen, etwas kreieren, um glücklich zu sein. Das kann schreiben sein, backen, malen, sticken, fotografieren... Oder nähen.

Da meine Zeit auch im nächsten Jahr begrenzt sein wird, ich nicht nur der unerfüllbaren Nähliste hinterherlaufen und trotzdem mal etwas Neues ausprobieren möchte, bin ich in mich gegangen. Am meisten Spaß macht mir das Nähen, wenn ich die Kleidungsstücke noch verzieren kann (deshalb wohl die ganze Mädchenkleidung). Am liebsten im Eigendesign und sei es noch so klein und schlicht. Außerdem habe ich festgestellt, dass ich gerne mit den Kindern male (seeeehr naiv!). Dann fiel mir noch dieses Buch in die Hände, das Drucken mit Stempeln, Schablonen und Siebdruck behandelt. Ach, und batiken wollte ich schon im letzten Jahr.

*Das wird also mein Projekt für 2012: Entwerfen, Bedrucken und Verzieren von Stoff.*

Hat jemand Lust mitzumachen? Ich werde das Ganz sicher nicht allzu aufwändig aufziehen, aber vielleicht können wir zusammen etwas Neues mit dem ganzen Stoff anfangen, den wir so brauchen?! Einen Plan, damit alles in 2012 unterkommt, überlege ich mir noch.

Apron/Schürze

When I saw this photo print at Stoff&Stil, I immediately thought about an animal-, nature- and outdoors-lover I know. I briefly considered making a pillow cover, but that would have been huge, and I didn't want to  mail a whole pillow.

Then I thought of making an apron. I used one of mine for a pattern and added some fabric scraps, because the print wasn't quite large enough. I also added a full lining because the fabric is rather flimsy. Gorgeous print, though, isn't it? I also really like the result.

The lining, incidentally, was 1/3 of an old curtain. The other 2/3 became another angel costume. I absolutely had to eat my words; when Karin posted her lovely angel costume I said I would've gone with leggings and a t-shirt. When I had to come up with a costume on a week's notice (a week filled to the brim with non-sewing moments!), I got into true stunt sewing mode - no pattern, no muslins, no prisoners! I just kept sewing until it sorta looked like an angel and sorta fit! I may show it but haven't taken pictures yet.

I also almost finished a pair of pants and a pinafore dress for DD. All I want for Christmas is... no more UFOs!

Der Fotoprint von Stoff&Stil ließ mich gleich an einen sehr naturverbundenen zu Beschenkenden denken. Was machen? Einen Kissenbezug? Der wäre riesig geworden und ich hatte keine Lust, riesige Kissen per Post zu versenden. Ich hab's, eine Schürze! Als Muster habe ich eine vorhandene Schürze genommen, ein paar Stoffrest ergänze und sie gefüttert, da der Fotodruck zwar sehr hübsch aber auch sehr dünn ist.

Zum Füttern habe ich1/3 eines alten Vorhangs benutzt. Die anderen 2/3 sind jetzt noch ein Engelkostüm geworden. Karin hatte ich auf ihr schönes Kostüm noch ganz großspurig kommentiert, ich hätte an ihrer Stelle einfach irgendetwas Weißes aus dem Schrank gezogen. Ha! Statt dessen habe ich die nicht vorhandene Zeit genutzt, einfach drauflos zu schneiden und zu nähen, bis es halbwegs nach Engel aussah. Fotos später, vielleicht!

Außerdem fast fertig: Hose und Latzrock für's Töchterchen. Zu Weihnachten wünsche ich mir nur, dass alles fertig wird!

Sewing Simplified/Nähen gaaaaaanz einfach

Für den Fall, dass mich noch jemand Deutschsprachiges liest, hier eine Umfrage.

Schon seit ich Frauenzeitschriften lese begegnen mir Projekte in den jeweiligen "Bastelausgaben" wie jetzt in der Brigitte. Bitteschön, das Bastelobjekt der Woche:

Ein Cape für die Freundin. So weit, so entzückend. Jetzt kommt's, Schnitt und Anleitung:

"Nach dem Schema einen Papierschnitt anfertigen. Ein Karo=10cm x 10cm. Nähen. Fertig."

Oder so ähnlich. Mich interessiert brennend: Hat schon mal jemand so etwas ausprobiert? Kann das überhaupt etwas werden?  Bedeutet nicht jeder kleine Wackler in der Schemavergrößerung eine Abweichung von mehreren Zentimetern? Oder sind das so Projekte, die zwar regelmäßig veröffentlicht werden, aber nie jemand ernsthaft nachnäht? Und wieso kann ich als blutiger Back-Laie die Plätzchen machen, muss aber für das Nähprojekt fast schon Schneiderin sein?

Fragen über Fragen.

I wrote about a German magazine featuring sewing patterns quite a while ago. This summer there was another "Brigitte" issue with sewing patterns. There is however another format of sewing in German women's mags that is sometimes part of a general DIY issue, and which has a very simple presentation (that makes me wonder whether anybody really sews this and if so, with what result).

The case in point:

Lovely cape. Here's the catch: the instructions.

You're supposed to enlarge the pattern youself (one check equals 4 x 4 inches), then sew. As you can see, the instructions aren't very much longer than that. I hope I get a German reader to answer who has made something like this, and whether it has worked out!
