Wardrobe Planning/Nähen nach Plan

(Deutsch gibt's unten)

I'd like to highlight a fabulous post by (of course) the fabulous Dr. E. which got me thinking about wardrobe planning. I often go where my fancy takes me with my sewing, and when I think of wardrobe building I get overwhelmed because of the sheer amount of patterns I'd need.

E. does some very practical - and I mean that in the best sense - wardrobe sewing. She advises you to think about the "uniform" you wear every day, and to collect TNT patterns for the basic shapes in your wardrobe.

My most worn garment types are

  • fitted knit tees (with long/short/no sleeves which could all come from the same pattern as E. says - I never thought about that, duh)
  • woven blouses
  • cardigans (which could made using the tee pattern, with adjustments)
  • trouser style pants
  • slim jeans
  • knee-length skirts of different shapes, no dirndl or pencil skirts though
  • trench style jackets and coats
  • blazer style jackets
  • cardigan style jackets (again, could be made from one basic adjusted tee pattern)
Of these, I have the blouse and the skirt patterns. Would it be worth trying to find and perfect the other five pattern types I'd need? Would I get bored with sewing basics? I know I'd love to have/wear the result.

How about you? How much planning goes into your sewing? How practical do your self-made garments have to be?

Knit Socks/Stricksocken

I also have: Knit a pair of sock(-let-)s. I would've made them larger except the children had been using the wool for crafting and I didn't know how much there was left.

I only ever knit at the hospital. (And only socks so far; I hope I'll never have enough time for a sweater!) DS came home today and the socks are finished. I call that good timing! Thank you all for your well wishes; he is already roaming the house with his sister and feeling fine.

As to November 11th being Corduroy Appreciation Day:

I hadn't known about that. November 11 is two different holidays around here none of which have anything to do with sewing. First, it's St. Martin's day and children have parades carrying crafted lanterns, singing songs and walking after an impersonator of St. Martin on a horse.

Second, in my part of Germany it's the start of carnival celebrations. No, really, die-hard carnival fans start now and carry on through to Lent. Regular people, not necessarily.

Anyway, here's DD with her horse lantern, wearing the corduroy pants I made here. Cord on November 11, all's well.

Bubble Skirt/Ballonrock

I made this very simple bubble skirt a few weeks ago. The material - ordered online - was meant to be a dress, but although it's corduroy it was in a quilt-fabric width and not enough for a dress. So, to make lemonade... I made a bubble skirt. The measurements are from an Ottobre issue, not sure which one. I added an elastic waist; at first I just used ribbing which wasn't strong enough so I unpicked and added a wide elastic.

Since the skirt, I haven't sewn a stitch.

I have: Spent a wonderful week with the kids on a choir workshop. I used to sing in choirs decades ago and always loved it, but I have to prioritize my engagements at the moment and ballet won :-) Still, I love to sing and try to do it with the children as much as possible. So, it was a huge treat to sing in a choir again, even if just for a week!

I also have: Finished our annual family photo books, sorting thousands of pictures, re-living the year (and heaving a sigh of relief when it was finished!).

I also have: Taken DS to the hospital :-( Turns out he has lime disease and has to be treated IV for two weeks. They're up next Sunday, so yay for that!

I'm still reading and hugely enjoying all your wonderful blogs, even if I don't comment much at the moment. See you back at the sewing machine, hopefully soon!

SSS Week 2/Woche II + Top Knipmode

Aaargh... Why can't I comment? I've emptied my cache or whatever you call it, I do not click "stay logged in", nothing helps. Now I'm wondering... Where do my comments go to?  Some black hole in interspace?

Here's week 2: / Woche II:

(top, top, skirt, skirt, blouse)
(Top, Top, Rock, Rock, Bluse)

I also made this Knipmode top again; I thought I'd taken a better photo but apparently, no.
Hm.

Happy sewing!
Näht was Schönes!

Self-Stitched September Week 1/Woche I

And: What's up with Blogger? I can't leave comments anywhere, I've tried really, so here's "You've all sewn lovely things; one of these days I'll be able to tell you again"!

This is/was week one or so of Self-Stitched September. I didn't take pictures every day, maybe around 20, so I'll show you four collages and hope I don't bore you to tears!

Happy sewing everybody!

Self-stitched/Selbstgenäht: top/Top, blouse and skirt/Bluse und Rock, skirt/Rock, skirt/Rock, top/Top

Boy's Hat

Cute, no? In a pinch, I've borrowed it for a bag. I made two identical *hats* for myself and my best friend who loves London as much as I do, from the Cath Kidston fabric bought last year in England.

The last picture is, incidentally, Day 2 of Self-Stitched September. I may or may not get around to doing a review. Bad blogger! Happy sewing!

P.S. Thank you for the encouraging comments regarding the school problem. We'll get through I'm sure.

P.P.S. I drafted the bag with the help of a dinner plate. As it turns out, Wedgwood (anglophile, I told ya`) dinner plates make a good bag size.

I needed this. Life/mothering has been a bit hard since DS started school last year; last week another school year began. I'm almost starting to envy those who are able to homeschool (illegal in Germany), though I'm sure that isn't a piece of cake either...

To elevate my mood, I made a fall dress for DD out of some small wale corduroy we bought in the Netherlands three years ago. I looked for a very simple pattern and found this one. I took off the button placket, added a centered back zipper, lengthened the sleeves, put some elastic in the sleeve cuffs, and fully lined the dress. I kept the four little folds at the neck and the neck binding (and forgot to bind the lining as well. In the end I handstitched it in.)

Was mache ich da?

Before you start feeling sorry for me, last week was my birthday, and DH and I had breakfast here:

Life is good. Happy sewing!

Alles wird gut. Viel Spaß beim Nähen!
