Self-Stitched September: This Is It

First, thank you so much for all your thoughtful comments on my last post! I'm taking away to be glad he (still) lets me sew for him, and to be receptive to whether or not he will want me to continue.

This September has been a bit rough on me. Both of my children came down with pneumonia, DS is having a tough start in first grade, my thoughts and energies were not on sewing, blogging, documenting.

(Self-stitched: skirt, blouse, lounge pants, skirt, skirt)

I stopped taking pictures halfway through the month. Above are the last ones I took; I also took one (on the far right) today for closure. When taking my picture (and choosing picture-worthy outfits; not necessarily successfully) became more of a chore than anything else I decided to drop the picture-taking. I kept my pledge of wearing at least one self-stitched garment every day, however!

I couldn't keep it up all the time, but a few weeks of getting out the Self-Stitched garments and really putting them to the test has been worth it, again. One surprising discovery: I really do love the navy polka-dot blouse! I just needed SSS to make me get out my skinny jeans (the only bottom this blouse really goes with) from the depths of the closet so I could successfully wear it.

So again, thank you Zoe for initiating this! And thank you to everyone who followed this, and thank you to all the other Self-Stitchers this September who inspired me with their wardrobes.

  1. It sounds like you had a lot on your plate this month. I do hope your children are feeling better! Even though you may not have gotten all the pics, it is still impressive you completed the challenge. Way to go!

  3. It sounds like you've been doing well to get out of bed and dressed at all this month, never mind the self-stitched thing. Hope everyone is getting better. And make sure you're not harboring low-grade pneumonia yourself meanwhile. I've tested that when you're too worried about other people it's easy to attribute the main symptom, exhaustion, to the circumstances, and to omit necessary treatment...

That said, if this sss month encouraged you to wear things you made, it fulfilled its essential role. It can be entertaining to make something, but it's much better if every day you get the satisfaction of wearing something that's perfect for you.

I find that I often have a bit of a shock when something's finished and reality intrudes on my initial fantasy, especially if I had trouble with some technical part. It helps a lot to make sure I wear it the next day, and a few times fairly quickly, then I get over that ankward spot and the item gets truly incorporated into the wardrobe. Remember the study where a baby has to taste a new food 10 times before finding it truly palatable? The same can apply to new clothes, especially in a new style. So don't shove new things to the back of the closet, give them a real run before you decide you don't like them.
